Shawl from the Lao Neua
40 x 216 cm
Good Condition, small spot in the middle field
This kind of textile is called pair beang, which means shawl. It was alway woven with an elaborate diamond pattern on one end and a series of contrasting bands at the other.
The diamond pattern is very significant and indicates the duang tda or third eye.
During a ceremony to appease the spirits the pair beang was worn as a headdress, folded so that the diamond pattern fell exactly on the forehead.
I have more pieces from Thailand, Laos and Indonesia in my collection – please ask for more informations
