A 19th-century gold pendant depicting the goddess Lakshmi.
Traditionally reinforced with shellac to support the delicate goldwork, the pendant features a silver backing.
Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of fortune, beauty, abundance, and prosperity, is among the most revered deities of the Indian pantheon. As the consort of Vishnu, she embodies the sustaining power of the universe and is especially venerated during the festival of Diwali, when blessings for prosperity and well-being in the coming year are sought.
The pendant is suspended from a necklace of faceted rubies, whose rich colour complements the warmth of the gold.
